How Often Can You Get Botox® Treatments?

Our facial muscles help us express ourselves. At the same time, though, they pull and tug on the skin above them, creating lines and wrinkles. Botox® can target specific muscles to let these lines and wrinkles relax while leaving you free to share all your usual expressions.

How Does Botox® Work?

Botox® uses botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin produced by a bacterium. This neurotoxin interrupts the signals between nerves and muscles by disrupting the action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. When injected into the face with precision, it will target only those facial muscles causing your lines and wrinkles. Botox® stops the nerve from telling the muscle to contract. This allows the skin to become smooth and relaxed.

How Often Can You Get Botox® Treatments?

You can expect your Botox® results to begin to appear after about seven days. They should last for three to four months depending on the individual. Ongoing Botox® treatments can be performed before the previous treatment wears off. Too much Botox® can cause more muscle paralysis than intended, but since the body gradually eliminates Botox® from the nerve endings, you can safely have another treatment by the end of three to four months.

What Can Botox® Treat?

Botox® has been approved to treat lines and wrinkles in the following areas:

Crow’s Feet

These lines around the corners of the eyes often become most noticeable when we smile. Using Botox® on the muscles that cause these crinkles has no effect on your smile but eases the strain on the skin around the eyes.

Glabellar Lines

These lines between the brows can become quite deep, especially in men since they have a larger brow than women. They may also be called the “11’s” because they are vertical, and they form as a result of frowning and similar expressions.

Forehead Lines

Raising the eyebrows and other facial expressions can cause horizontal lines across the forehead. Botox® will relax the muscles that pull on the forehead skin without limiting any other range of facial motion.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox®?

Most people are good candidates for Botox®. It has an extensive safety record and has been used in medical and cosmetic treatments for decades. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use Botox®, and neither should people with certain neuromuscular disorders.
