It’s normal to feel low every now and then. But when you do, just remember that it’s not as hard as you may think to turn your frown upside down! And don’t forget — taking steps to enhance your inner well-being does wonders for your appearance, too!
Here are a few of our favorite, super easy mood-boosting tips:
Don’t forget to breathe!
Your brain needs a lot of oxygen to function well, and deep breathing can help bring more of the good stuff in to relieve stress, anxiety, depression and negative thought patterns. Deep breathing will also help make you look younger by increasing the secretion of anti-aging hormones. Next time you think of it, allow your belly to expand as you inhale, focusing on bringing your breath to the abdomen rather than the chest or around the collar bones.
Mix it up!
Science shows that welcoming a bit of change every now and then is actually good for your mental health and mood. Even a small change like getting a new skin treatment at our medspa — (did you know we do amazing chemical peels and facials?) — is sure to reinvigorate your senses and put some spring in your step.
Call your pals!
Regular social contact is an effective mood booster, according to a study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology. Our friends make our problems seem more manageable because we feel we aren’t alone in dealing with them. So the next time your mood needs a boost, make a date to catch up with a good friend.
Cuddle up with Fido
Spending time with a dog or cat can make you happier, according to a study from the University of Missouri. Participants showed increased levels of the mood boosting brain chemicals serotonin and oxytocin after only a few minutes with a furry friend. You don’t have to adopt a pet to get the benefits. Spending time with a friend or neighbor’s pets will do the trick.
Focusing on the present moment is a proven technique for improving mood. When you find yourself fretting about past or future events, hit the pause button, so to speak, and turn your attention to the present moment by focusing on where your body is now, whether it’s the feel of your child’s hand in yours or the breeze on your face. And don’t worry if your brain keeps trailing off — just keep hitting the “reset button” as often as you remember. It’s that simple!
